When most people think of risky careers, becoming a warehousing professional probably isn’t one of them. Yet each year, a vast number of DC personnel are injured or killed on the job, a fact that’s not surprising when you consider how many moving parts and pieces of equipment the typical warehouse has.
In fact, according to the most recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are approximately five injuries for every 100 warehouse workers – and nearly two dozen annual warehousing fatalities.
The bad news is it’s not possible to avoid all of these incidents, because warehouses have human beings working there, and humans occasionally make mistakes.
However, the good news is it’s possible to prevent many of them – especially if you engage in best practices like daily safety briefings or putting together a detailed warehouse safety calendar.
After all, even though OSHA’s recommendations for most businesses including holding periodic safety meetings, there’s no rule that says you can’t address safety issues more often than that. And there are many reasons why you should, including the fact that it allows your company to keep safety top-of-mind and to emphasize that careful behavior is an important part of every employee’s day-to-day responsibility.

That’s where the attached warehouse safety calendar comes in.
Prepared by Verst, it’s chock-full of ideas for short-but-salient warehouse safety topics you can cover with your DC personnel every single work day.
Like DC risks themselves, these safety topics run the gamut from how to prevent powered equipment injuries (February 7, 18 and 23) and reduce serious cuts (February 4, 9, and 28) to what to do in the event of workplace violence (February 11) and why it’s important to know about blood borne pathogens (February 3).
However, they share one important thing in common: They’re all focused on helping your company do everything in its power to ensure that your warehouse employees and temps return home each day just as healthy and pain-free as they were when they arrived at work. Because as OSHA itself has frequently stated: “No person should ever have to become injured, ill or die for a paycheck.”
We hope you’ll put some time on your calendar to mindfully read and consider incorporating at least some of these daily ideas into your warehousing operations – or doing the same with some of our previous warehouse safety calendars.
And we encourage you to free to ask us for help if there’s any way we can assist you in moving your company’s safety initiatives forward.
Here’s wishing you a safe and successful February. (And P.S., If you want to really reduce your risk of accident or injury, don’t forget to remember your significant other on Valentine’s Day this year.)
